भक्त रामदास

दक्षिण में गोदावरी के किनारे कनकावरी नाम की एक नगरी थी। वहीं रामदास रहता था। जाति का चमार था, परन्तु अत्यन्त सरल हृदय का, सत्य और न्याय की कमाई खाने वाला और प्रभु का निरन्तर चिन्तन करने वाला भक्त था। रामदास की पतिव्रता स्त्री का नाम मूली था। दम्पत्ती में बड़ा प्रेम था। इनके एक छोटा लड़का था, वह भी माता-पिता का परम भक्त था।

तीनों प्राणियों के पेट भरने पर जो पैसे बचते, उनसे रामदास अतिथि की सेवा और पीड़ितों के दुःख दूर करने का प्रयास करता। वह समय-समय पर भगवान नाम का संकीर्तन सुनने जाया करता और बड़े प्रेम से स्वयं भी अपने घर कीर्तन करता। कीर्तन में सुनी हुई यह एक पंक्ति ‘हरि मैं जैसो तैसो बस तेरो।’ उसे बहुत प्यारी लगी और उसे कण्ठस्थ हो गयी। वह निरन्तर इसी पंक्ति को गुनगुनाता हुआ सारे काम किया करता। वह सचमुच अपने को भगवान का दास और आश्रित समझकर मन ही मन आनन्द में भरा रहता।

शालिग्राम प्रतिमा की प्राप्ति

भगवान तो भाव के भूखे होते हैं, वह रामदास के ऐसे प्रेम को देखकर उसे अब अपनाना चाहते थे। कुछ चोर गहनों के साथ ही कहीं से एक सुन्दर विलक्षण स्वर्णयुक्त शालिग्राम की विशाल मूर्ति चुरा लाये थे, जो उनके लिए सिर्फ एक पत्थर था। उनमें से एक चोर के जूते टूट गये थे, उसने सोचा इस पत्थर के बदले में जूते की जोड़ी मिल जाए तो अच्छा है।

भगवत् प्रेरणा से शालिग्राम की मूर्ति को लेकर वह सीधा रामदास के घर पहुँचा और मूर्ति उसे दिखाकर कहने लगा- अरे भाई! देख यह कैसा मजेदार पत्थर है, ज़रा अपने औजार को इस पर घिस तो सही, देख कैसा अच्छा काम देता है, पर इसके बदले में मुझे एक जोड़ी जूते देने पड़ेंगे। चोर की आव़ाज सुनकर वह चौंका, उसके भजन में भंग पड़ा। उसने समझा कोई ख़रीददार है उसने जूते की एक जोड़ी चोर के सामने रख दी, चोर ने उसे पहनकर दामों की जगह वह मूर्ति रामदास के हाथ पर रख दी।

रामदास अभी तक अर्द्धचेतन अवस्था में था, उसका मन तो बस प्रभु के विग्रह की ओर खिंचा हुआ था इसलिए पैसे लेने की बात याद ही नहीं रही। मूर्ति को उसने अपने सामने रख दिया और उसी पर औज़ार घिसने लगा।

ब्राह्मण द्वारा शालिग्राम को मांगना

भगवान शालिग्राम बनकर प्यारे भक्त के घर आ गये। एक दिन एक ब्राह्मण उस तरफ़ से निकले, शालिग्राम की ऐसी अनोखी मूर्ति चमार के पत्थर की जगह देखकर उन्हें बहुत दुःख हुआ। उस समय रामदास उस गोल मूर्ति को पैरों के बीच में रखकर उस पर औजार घिस रहा था। ब्राह्मण ने विचार किया भला, बंदरों को हीरे की क़ीमत का क्या पता? यह चमार शालिग्राम को क्या पहचाने?

उन्होंने मूर्ति खरीदने का विचार कर नज़दीक आकर उससे कहा- भाई! आज मैं तुमसे एक चीज़ माँगता हूँ, तू मुझे देकर पुण्य लाभ कर। यह पत्थर मुझे बहुत सुन्दर लगता है, मेरे नेत्र इससे हटाये नहीं हटते। रामदास जी ने ब्राह्मण के इस दीन भाव को देखकर वह पत्थर ब्राह्मण को दे दिया। पण्डित जी इस दुर्लभ मूर्ति को पाकर बड़े ही प्रसन्न हुए, वे उसे घर ले आये, उन्होंने कुएँ के जल से स्नान किया फिर पवित्र स्वच्छ वस्त्र पहनकर शालिग्राम भगवान को पंचामृत से स्नान करा सिंहासन पर पधारकर षोड शोपचार से उनकी पूजा की।

पण्डित जी पूजा तो बड़ी विधि से करते थे, परन्तु उनके हृदय में दैवीय गुण नहीं थे। उसमें लोभ, इर्ष्या, कामना,भोगवासना, इन्द्रिय सुख की लालसा, क्रोध, वैर आदि दुर्गुण भरे थे।

भगवद्-इच्छा

रामदास अशिक्षित था, परन्तु उसका हृदय बड़ा ही पवित्र था। उसके मन में लोभ, इच्छा, भोगेच्छा, क्रोध और वैर आदि का नाम निशान भी नहीं था। भगवान शालिग्राम ने विचार किया- अहा! जब वह परम श्रद्धा व भक्तिपूर्वक गीत-गोविन्द गाता हुआ मेरी मूर्ति पर जल छोड़कर अपना औजार घिसता था उस समय मुझे ऐसा लगता था मानो कोई परम भक्त मेरा शरीर पोंछ रहा है, जब वह मेरा नाम-संकीर्तन करता हुआ मूर्ति को पैर पर रखकर उस पर चमड़ा रखकर काटता था, तब मुझे ऐसा लगता मानो मेरे अंगो पर कोई भक्त चन्दन, कस्तूरी का लेप कर रहा है।

अवश्य ही उसको मेरे यथार्थ स्वरूप का ज्ञान नहीं है, परन्तु उसने अपनी सरल विशुद्ध, निस्वार्थ भक्ति से मुझे वश कर लिया है। मैं जैसा विशुद्ध और निस्वार्थ भक्ति से वश होता हूँ, वैसा दूसरे किसी साधन से नहीं होता।

शालिग्राम का रामदास के पास वापिस आना

ब्राह्मण की पूजा सच्ची नहीं है, वह मेरा भक्त नहीं है वह तो अपनी कामनाओं का भक्त है, यह विचार कर भगवान शालिग्राम ने पुनः रामदास के घर जाने का निश्चय किया और रात को स्वप्न में ब्राह्मण से कहा- तू मुझे रामदास के घर पहुँचा दे। ब्राह्मण सुबह ही रामदास के घर शालिग्राम की मूर्ति को लेकर पहुँच गया और उसने रामदास से कहा- रामदास ये कोई साधारण पत्थर नहीं है ये तो साक्षात् भगवान ही हैं, तीनों लोकों के स्वामी हैं। अब तू बहुत प्रेम से इनकी पूजा करना।

ब्राह्मण के वचन सुनकर रामदास की आँखों में आँसू आ गये और वह प्रेमविह्वल हो गया और भगवान से प्रार्थना करने लगा- प्रभो! मैं अति दीन, हीन, अंजान, दुर्जन, पतित प्राणी हूँ, रात-दिन चमड़ा घिसना ही मेरा काम है। मुझमें न शौच है, न सदाचार। मुझ-सा नीच जगत् में और कौन होगा ? ऐसे पतित पर भी प्रभु ने कृपा की।

रामदास का भगवद्-प्रेम

अब रामदास दिन और रात भगवान् के प्रेम में कभी रोता और कभी हँसता, तो कभी नाचता। अब तो उसे एक ही रट लग गयी नाथ! अब मुझे दर्शन दो, पहले तो मुझे पता ही नहीं था पर आपने ही मेरे हृदय में ये आग लगायी है। मैंने तो न पहचानकर आपकी मूर्ति का निरादर किया पर आप मुझे नहीं भूले और ब्राह्मण के द्वारा अपना स्वरूप बताकर मेरे घर आ गए।

यदि दर्शन नहीं देने थे तो यह सब क्यों किया? एक बार अपने साँवरे-सलोने चाँद से मुखड़े की झाँकी दिखाकर मेरे मन को सदा के लिए चुरा लो। मेरे मोहन! करुणा की वर्षा कर दो इस कंगाल पर। एक बार दर्शन दो और मुझे कृतार्थ करो। भगवान भक्तवत्सल हैं। जो एकमात्र भगवान को ही अपना आश्रय मानकर उनसे प्रार्थना करता है तो उसकी प्रार्थना भगवान तत्काल सुनते हैं।

भगवान का वृद्ध ब्राह्मण के रूप में रामदास को भगवद्दर्शन

उसके ऐसे दिव्य प्रेम को देखकर भगवान से रहा न गया, वे एक वृद्ध ब्राह्मण का रूप धरकर उसके घर आ गये। भगवान ने उसके घर आकर उसकी विरह वेदना को शान्त नहीं किया बल्कि उसकी विरह वेदना को पहले से भी और अधिक बढ़ा दिया और उससे कहा- अरे भाई! भगवान् का दर्शन कोई मामूली बात थोडे़ ही है। बडे़-बड़े देवता, योगी, मुनि अनन्तकाल तक तप, ध्यान और समाधि करने पर भी जिनका दर्शन नहीं कर पाते, तुझ जैसे मनुष्य को उनके दशर्न कैसे हो सकते हैं? यह सुनकर रामदास की आँखों से झर-झर आँसू बहने लगे। उसने कहा- हे देव! मैं क्या करूँ? मुझसे रहा नहीं जाता और मेरा यह दृढ़ विश्वास है कि मेरे नाथ दीनबन्धु हैं, दया के अपार सागर हैं, मुझे वे दर्शन देंगे और ज़रूर देंगे।

पति कैसे ही रंग-रूप का क्यों न हो पर पत्नी का पति में अटूट प्रेम होता है, ऐसे ही मैं अपने स्वामी के स्नेह को परख चुका हूँ। यों कहते-कहते रामदास का कंठ रूंध गया, ऐसे दृढ़ विश्वास व अनन्य प्रेम को देखकर भगवान से बिल्कुल रहा ना गया। वे अपने भक्त को अपने से मिलाकर एक करने के लिए छटपटाने लगे। अकस्मात् अनन्त कोटि सूर्याें का प्रकाश छा गया। रामदास की आँखें मुँद गयीं। उसने हृदय में देखा,भगवान मदनमोहन त्रिभंगी लाल मुस्कुराते हुए मधुर-मधुरमुरली बजा रहे हैं और कह रहे हैं- आ मेरे पास आ। कैसा सुन्दर रूप है। वह आनन्द सागर में डूब गया। अचानक आँखें खुलीं देखता है सामने भी प्रभु का वही दिव्य सच्चिदानन्द घन विग्रह विराजमान है।

रामदास के आनन्द का पारावार नहीं रहा, उसकी सारी व्याकुलता सदा के लिए मिट गयी। भगवान ने उसे अपने में समा लिया और उसने प्रभु के दिव्य धाम में जा कर नित्य पार्षद का शरीर ग्रहण किया।

The Story of Ramdas

In the south, on the banks of the Godavari River, there was a city named Kanakawari. Ramdas lived there. He was of the Chamar caste but had an exceptionally simple heart, lived a life of truth and justice, and was a constant devotee of the Lord. Ramdas's devoted wife was named Mooli. The couple shared great love. They had a young son who was also a great devotee of his parents.

Whatever money was left after feeding the three of them, Ramdas used it to serve guests and relieve the suffering of the needy. He would occasionally go to listen to the devotional singing of the Lord's name and lovingly conducted kirtans at his home. One line from the kirtan, "Hari main jaiso taiso bas tero," became very dear to him and he memorized it. He constantly hummed this line while doing all his work, genuinely considering himself a servant and dependent on God, and thus remained filled with joy in his heart.

The Acquisition of the Shaligram Idol

The Lord is always hungry for devotion, and seeing Ramdas's love, He wanted to embrace him. Some thieves had stolen an exquisite, remarkable Shaligram idol adorned with gold, which to them was just a stone. One of the thieves had broken his shoes and thought it would be good if he could get a pair of shoes in exchange for this stone.

Inspired by God, the thief took the Shaligram idol directly to Ramdas's house and showed it to him, saying, "Brother! Look at this interesting stone. Try sharpening your tools on it and see how well it works, but you will have to give me a pair of shoes in return." Hearing the thief's voice, Ramdas was startled, interrupting his hymn. He thought it was a customer, so he placed a pair of shoes in front of the thief. The thief wore them and, instead of paying, placed the idol in Ramdas's hands.

Ramdas was still in a semi-conscious state, his mind drawn only towards the Lord's idol, and forgot about taking payment. He placed the idol in front of him and began sharpening his tools on it.

A Brahmin Requests the Shaligram

The Lord, in the form of Shaligram, had come to his beloved devotee's house. One day, a Brahmin passed by and felt great sorrow seeing such a unique Shaligram idol being used as a stone by a Chamar. At that moment, Ramdas was holding the round idol between his feet and sharpening his tools on it. The Brahmin thought, "How can a monkey know the value of a diamond? This Chamar won't recognize the Shaligram."

He decided to buy the idol and approached Ramdas, saying, "Brother! Today I ask you for something. Please give it to me and earn some merit. This stone seems very beautiful to me; my eyes cannot be drawn away from it." Seeing the Brahmin's humble plea, Ramdas handed over the stone to him. The Brahmin was extremely pleased to receive this rare idol and brought it home. He bathed it with well water, wore clean, sacred clothes, and then bathed the Shaligram in panchamrit (a mixture of five sacred substances) before placing it on a throne and worshipping it with great devotion.

Although the Brahmin performed the rituals meticulously, his heart was not filled with divine qualities. It harbored greed, jealousy, desires, lust, cravings for sensory pleasures, anger, and enmity.

The Lord's Will

Ramdas was uneducated, but his heart was very pure. He had no trace of greed, desire, lust, anger, or enmity. Lord Shaligram thought, "Ah! When he used to sharpen his tools on my idol while singing the Geet Govind with utmost devotion, it felt as if a devotee was wiping my body. When he placed the idol between his feet, cutting leather while singing the Lord's name, it felt as if a devotee was applying sandalwood paste and musk on my body.

Though he may not know my true form, he has won me over with his simple, pure, selfless devotion. I am captivated by pure and selfless devotion like his, unlike any other means.

The Shaligram Returns to Ramdas

The Brahmin's worship was not genuine; he was not my devotee but a slave to his desires. So, the Lord Shaligram decided to return to Ramdas and appeared in the Brahmin's dream, instructing him to return the idol to Ramdas. The next morning, the Brahmin brought the Shaligram idol back to Ramdas and said, "Ramdas, this is no ordinary stone; it is the Lord Himself, the ruler of all three worlds. Now, worship Him with great love."

Hearing the Brahmin's words, Ramdas's eyes filled with tears, and he became overwhelmed with love, praying to the Lord, "O Lord! I am very lowly, ignorant, wicked, and fallen. My job is to work with leather day and night. I am neither pure nor virtuous. Who else could be as wretched as I am? Yet, the Lord has shown mercy to such a fallen person."

Ramdas's Devotion to the Lord

Now, Ramdas spent his days and nights in love for the Lord, sometimes crying, sometimes laughing, and sometimes dancing. He had only one request, "Lord! Show me your form. Earlier, I didn't know, but you kindled this fire in my heart. I unknowingly disrespected your idol, but you did not forget me and revealed your form through the Brahmin, coming to my home.

If you did not intend to show me your form, why did you do all this? Show me your beautiful, dark face once and steal my heart forever. My beloved! Shower your mercy on this poor soul. Show me your form once and fulfill me." The Lord is compassionate to His devotees. When someone sincerely prays to the Lord, considering Him their only refuge, the Lord listens to their prayer immediately.

The Lord Appears to Ramdas as an Old Brahmin

Seeing such divine love, the Lord could not resist. He came to Ramdas's house in the form of an old Brahmin. The Lord did not calm his separation pain but increased it even more, saying, "Brother! Seeing the Lord is not a trivial matter. Great deities, yogis, and sages, after infinite ages of penance, meditation, and samadhi, cannot see Him. How can someone like you expect to see Him?" Hearing this, tears streamed down Ramdas's face. He said, "O Divine One! What can I do? I cannot bear it anymore, and I firmly believe that my Lord, the friend of the humble, the ocean of mercy, will surely reveal Himself to me.

No matter what my husband's form and appearance may be, a wife has unwavering love for her husband. Similarly, I have experienced my Master's affection. Saying this, Ramdas's throat choked with emotion. Seeing such firm faith and unparalleled love, the Lord could not hold back any longer. He longed to unite with His devotee. Suddenly, a light brighter than countless suns enveloped everything. Ramdas's eyes closed, and in his heart, he saw Lord Madanmohan standing in a tribhanga pose, smiling and playing a sweet, melodious flute, saying, "Come to me." What a beautiful form! Ramdas was immersed in the ocean of bliss. Suddenly, his eyes opened, and he saw the same divine, blissful form of the Lord before him.

Ramdas's joy knew no bounds, and all his anguish vanished forever. The Lord absorbed him into Himself, and Ramdas attained the divine abode, taking on the eternal form of a parshad (eternal associate of the Lord).
